About Us
Pontefract Groups Together was formed in March 2006. The aim was for all local groups, particularly those who were involved in the Towns history and heritage, to join together to start the process of developing the knowledge of, and access to, Pontefracts rich heritage.
The Group successfully accessed a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which is funding the employment of an heritage development officer, projects with children and volunteers, written and oral histories, and Heritage Open Days. The future strategy is to look forward to the next five to ten years and help the development of the Town as a major tourist attraction - a key economic neccessity following the demise of Pontefract's former main industry - coal mining.
Groups Together is made up of representatives from the various groups and societies involved in the town, and has a trustee body which deals with the organisational practicalities. We are currently seeking Charitable status.
